Opening Night! (2008)

Published October 18, 2008

Honored to be the very first orchestra to perform in North Central College's new Wentz Concert Hall, the DSO kicks off an exciting 2008-2009 season with a special musical dedication: Ludwig van Beethoven's Consecration of the House Overture. Next comes a singular musical gem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: his Sinfonia concertante, performed by two recent winners of the Concert Artists Guild International Music Competition, violinist Michi Wiancko and violist Jennifer Stumm. To culminate this exciting evening, the DSO performs the first of several monumental Fifth Symphonies that the orchestra will feature during its 55th anniversary season: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's passionately melodic and powerfully dramatic Symphony No. 5 in E minor, which has been an audience favorite ever since its 1888 premiere.
